A Future Without Fingerprints

Our world is fueled by touches.
The average person taps their phone 2,617 times a day.
Office workers? They click and type up to 10,000 times daily.
Add in light switches, transit cards, and clunky apps, and we’re drowning in a sea of touches.
It’s not the touches themselves that are the problem—it’s what they reveal.
Each tap, swipe, and click highlights inefficiencies: slow systems, redundant tasks, and clunky interfaces.
The sheer volume of touches is a symptom of outdated processes that waste time, drain cognitive energy, and cost billions in productivity.
But what if technology worked differently?
Imagine a world where interacting with technology feels as natural as talking to a friend over coffee.
No more fumbling through apps, clicking endless menus, or dealing with clunky interfaces that leave you frustrated.
Last weekend, I read Age of the Invisible Machines by Robb Wilson.
If you’re not familiar, Wilson is a pioneer in Conversational AI and a leading voice on how technology can seamlessly integrate into our daily lives.
(Great book. Wilson also has a firm grasp on how blockchain will fit into “Voice First” AI technology.)
Conversational AI, says Wilson, is built on three game-changing technologies: Conversational User Interfaces (CUIs), Composable Architecture, and No-Code Programming.
(More on those in a moment.)
Together, he says, they’ll completely change the way our global digital economy operates.
Let’s start with the obvious…
The Trillion-Dollar Problem
Before Christmas, I called a store to check on an item.
A chipper, helpful voice answered. She immediately told me what I wanted to know, held the item for me, and I was off the phone in less than a minute.
It was the most pleasant interaction I’ve had with a company in a while.
I had to wonder: “Was it AI?”
Why not?
What if every customer interaction felt that smooth?
Inefficient communication is one of the global economy’s biggest pain points.
Missed calls, long hold times, and repeated questions waste time and money—for customers and businesses alike. It’s expensive friction.
Now imagine that voice was an AI agent that could perform simple actions.
Polite, knowledgeable, and tireless, it answers questions, checks inventory, holds items for you, and resolves issues instantly, scaling to handle thousands of calls at once.
No breaks, no frustration—just seamless service. And not a single worker had to tap a key or click a mouse.
Of course, this would require some human oversight -- but not nearly as much as exists now. And this isn’t just better customer support; it’s a solution to a trillion-dollar inefficiency.
Conversational AI eliminates friction, transforming communication into something that feels effortless.
But better customer service is just the beginning…
A Future Without Fingertips
Consider: some 80% of small to medium-sized businesses around the world don’t have a website.
Many businesses in emerging economies rely on social media platforms (e.g., WhatsApp, Facebook) as their primary digital presence instead of formal websites.
But even in more digitally advanced economies, the number can hover around half.
Why? Simple answer: although we’ve made it easier to make a website, it’s still not easy enough.
Let’s say a yoga instructor wants to offer online classes but lacks tech skills or a budget.
Instead of struggling with confusing platforms, she tells her AI agent, “Set up a website for me to host yoga classes.”
The AI handles everything.
It integrates Stripe for payments, Zoom for live classes, scheduling services for in-person classes, and a chat module for inquiries.
It even suggests templates.
When the instructor picks one and asks for a purple and white color scheme, the AI updates it instantly.
No coding. No frustration. Just results.
And the best part? She didn’t have to touch a single screen or key.
This is the future Wilson describes in Age of Invisible Machines.
And, as mentioned, it’s powered by three core technologies:
- Conversational User Interfaces (CUIs): Say what you need; the system handles it. From building websites to booking flights, it’s fast and human-like.
- Composable Architecture: Traditional business solutions become “modules”. Like LEGO bricks, modular tools—payments, chats, scheduling—snap together to create custom solutions without starting from scratch.
- No-Code Programming: AI agents code for you, empowering anyone to create without needing a developer.
It’s not just a better way to interact with technology…
It’s a complete reimagining of how industries operate.
As Harvard Business School’s Marco Iansiti says, “This isn’t disruption—it’s a fundamental shift in production and interaction.”
And, the thing is…
It’s not just possible. It’s already happening.
Early examples are already here.
Tomorrow, we’ll dive into a company that used these tools to rise from startup to global financial powerhouse in just four years.
Stay tuned for that -- and the investment opportunities -- in this new world of Conversational AI.
