Since last fall, I've been fixated on one idea: GPS is the most important utility nobody thinks about—and the most fragile.
When it first caught my eye, it seemed like a niche concern. The warnings were mostly only in defense journals and shipping insurance reports nobody reads.
Then the receipts piled up.
In January, more than a dozen European nations issued a joint warning: jamming over the Baltic was threatening global commerce.
By March, the Iran war put it in overdrive—more than 1,100 ships suffered GPS interference in a single day, some appearing on digital maps inside airports and nuclear plants.
Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz—20% of the world's traded oil—slowed to a crawl. Insurers started walking away.
Pilots told the same story from the cockpit: map displays drifting a mile off course, false altitude readings triggering phantom "pull up" alarms.
Analysts now count more than 700 jamming and spoofing incidents worldwide.
Every day.
And the market started agreeing. Iridium—flagged for its resilient spectrum and GPS-independent timing signal—got scooped up by Rocket Lab this summer at a fat premium.
So why am I back on it today?
Because there's a layer underneath all of it that almost nobody is watching. Deeper than jammers. Deeper than solar storms.
The planet itself.
And it has a lot to do with the Pentagon’s biggest generational bet: the Golden Dome.
The Pole’s on the Move
The magnetic north pole is drifting.
Right now. As you read this.
For most of the 20th century, it wandered the Canadian Arctic at a leisurely 10 kilometers a year, like a retiree with a metal detector. Then, in the 1990s, it took off—sprinting toward Siberia at 55 kilometers a year.
In 2019, it moved so fast scientists issued an emergency update to the World Magnetic Model—the map inside every smartphone, ship, and airliner on Earth.
The pole had outrun the map.
The field is weakening, too. This February, European satellites confirmed the radiation-leaking soft spot over the South Atlantic has grown by half the size of Europe. And it's speeding up.
None of this is doom. (Probably.) The field has wobbled for four billion years. Life mostly moved on.
Problem is, we built a trillion-dollar economy on the assumption it would stay relatively stable. GPS timing synchronizes the stock market, the power grid, and the tractor planting your food.
And now the Pentagon is stacking its biggest bet in a generation—the Golden Dome missile shield—on that same fragile signal.
Jamming from below. Solar storms from above. A restless planet underneath. Washington needs a backup.
Which brings us to the play.
It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s STL
Rocket Lab (RKLB), as mentioned, is buying Iridium—an $8 billion deal expected to close in mid-2027.
Wall Street read it the obvious way: a rocket company buying an aging satellite network for its steady cash flow and government contracts.
Fair enough.
But buried inside the deal is something called STL—Satellite Time and Location.
STL broadcasts a timing and positioning signal from all 66 of Iridium's satellites. It's 1,000 times stronger than GPS. It's encrypted, which makes it hard to fake. It works indoors. And it keeps working when GPS goes dark.
This is already real, already earning. FAA data centers run their timing on STL. Roughly 500 partner companies build it into their products.
Here's the kicker. Congress passed a law in 2018 requiring a national backup to GPS. Eight years later, little has been built.
And the real catalyst: Golden Dome.

The Pentagon's new missile shield is, at bottom, a timing machine—tracking a hypersonic weapon means fusing data from dozens of satellites and radars, all synchronized to the microsecond.
The assumed clock for all of it is GPS, which is the first thing an adversary jams.
Rocket Lab is already inside the program, building 18 missile-tracking satellites under an $805 million contract.
Now it's buying the only proven, commercially available signal of its kind in orbit… encrypted, a thousand times stronger than GPS, and already keeping time for FAA data centers.
So with RKLB, you get three things: the repricing from startup to space prime still underway, Rocket Lab's core launch business, and STL, the timing layer Golden Dome will need, which the market values at roughly zero.
Today, STL is a side business—on track for $100 million a year by 2030, on voluntary adoption alone.
But if Washington ever mandates the GPS backup it demanded in 2018, every cell tower, data center, and power utility in America becomes a customer for exactly this—a proven, encrypted signal already in orbit. And the free option becomes a second business worth billions.
To be sure, I'm not backing up the truck yet. Rocket Lab's new Neutron rocket may slip further into 2027, and the company still has to finance this deal—both could offer a better entry.
But Watch the Flicker
Every era has an invisible utility everyone assumes is permanent—until it flickers.
The magnetic field won't collapse tomorrow. But nuisances and headaches are where budgets get written.
The backup to GPS is being built now—quietly, with defense money—and most of it just landed inside one ticker.
The pole spent a century going nowhere. Then it moved. My portfolio is moving with it.
